Cheltenham Town have signed former Sheffield Wednesday and Reading striker Lloyd Owusu on a free transfer from Yeovil Town.

The player visited Whaddon Road tonight (September 1) to complete the details of his move and the paperwork will be registered in time for the midnight transfer deadline. Owusu has signed an initial one year contract with the Robins.

The 31-year old former Ghana international, who began his career in non-league football with Slough Town, spent last season with Yeovil Town after two years at Brentford - his second spell with the Bees.

He first joined Brentford from Slough for £25,000 in 1998 and spent four years at Griffin Park before moving to Sheffield Wednesday. After 18 months with the Owls he spent another 18 months with Reading.

"Lloyd has a good track record and has scored goals at this level," said Robins manager Keith Downing.

"He's got great experience, strength and presence and can lead the forward line. He is different to what we have already in terms of his height and strength and will give us that extra firepower.

"Lloyd has been around the scene for a while so we know what he can do and what impressed me was that he was keen to come here.

"We've had a few setbacks with players we've tried to sign over the last few weeks but Lloyd wanted to come to Cheltenham and continue his career with us."

Meanwhile, on loan striker Barry Hayles has turned down a six month loan spell with the club and will have his loan arrangement reviewed on a monthly basis.

"Barry is happy with us but his personal circumstances mean that he is unable to commit to a long term loan," said Downing.

"We have the opportunity to extend his month's loan on further and we will look to do that if we can."

Of the trialists who took part in today's practice match at the training ground, French midfielder Kevin Tunani and former Plymouth Argyle striker Nick Chadwick have been invited back for a longer trial with the club. Trialists Callum Hart and Ryan Burge will continue to train with the squad. Trialists who are out of contract at the time the transfer window closes can still be signed by a club as they remain free agents.
