Former Cheltenham Town winger Lee Williams will have a benefit match staged for him by his current club Rushall Olympic on Sunday 10 August.

Williams suffered a serious eye injury in a freak accident last year that has affected his ability to work. He had signed for Rushall shortly before the accident, which occured when a car boot sprang up and hit him.

The benefit match, between a Lee Williams XI and a Midland All Star team, will take place at Rushall's Dales Lane ground near Walsall. A host of well-known Midlands players including some of Lee's former Cheltenham team-mates and Robins boss Keith Downing have been approached to play. Ex Robins Mark Yates, Neil Howarth, Chris Banks, Julian Alsop and John Brough are also set to be involved.

Williams, who is currently assistant to Rushall manager Paul Holleran, played for Cheltenham Town between 2001 and 2003 and contributed an important role in helping the club to promotion in 2002 via the play-offs. Julian Alsop, the only player so far to score over 20 Football League goals in a season for Cheltenham, recently said: "A lot of my goals came because Russell Milton and Lee Williams were supplying crosses from left and right. They were quality players who could deliver the ball just where you wanted it."

Williams is a former England youth international who began his career with Aston Villa. He later played for Peterborough United, Shamrock Rovers (Ireland), Tranmere Rovers and Mansfield Town before joining the Robins in September 2001. He made 51 starting and 12 substitute appearances for the Robins, scoring four goals including the vital equaliser in the 2002 play-off semi-final second leg against Hartlepool United. Since leaving Whaddon Road he has played Midlands non-league football with Telford United, Hednesford Town and Halesowen Town.

The match will take place at Rushall's Dales Lane ground (postcode for SatNav or map search is WS4 1LJ) with a 2pm kick-off on Sunday. Admission will be £5 adults with children admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult.
