Cheltenham Town manager Keith Downing interviewed after the 1-1 pre-season friendly draw against Bristol City:

"I know it's a cliche but pre-season matches are not so much about the results but about the performances and I think the performances throughout pre-season have been good. We've got one or two bumps and bruises but nothing serious and I think we're seeing a bit of confidence through the team. There might be one or two subtle changes from last year in terms of trying to get a bit more football into our play and everyone is buying into it well. We've got it all to come and we're all pretty positive.

"Shane Duff had a slight tightening in his thigh yesterday. He declared himself fit today but he felt it again in the warm-up so we left him out as a precaution more than anything else. Ashley Vincent also had a slight tightening in his groin and we have a small squad at the moment so didn't want to risk him any longer.

"Ashley scored a good goal and has now signed his contract as well. I'm sure there is more to come from him and with Ashley we are probably at the stage we were with Damian Spencer and Kayode Odejayi three years ago. He's had a serious injury but he's still young and is getting bigger and stronger. What I liked about him today is that he showed a bit of composure. He's got pace and good movement and took his goal very well.

"Paul Connor and Ashley Vincent need some competition up front and we're trying to do that. There has been some speculation about players that we're interested in and we'll continue to work hard at improving the squad. The pre-season games have shown that we have some good quality within the squad but we need to strengthen it further as everyone knows."
