League One news
By the end of the bank holiday weekend we will know which final two clubs are set to make up the 2008/09 League One line-up.
Whoever it's going to be one will definitely be from Yorkshire and the other, from Greater Manchester. Doncaster Rovers, who only lost out on automatic promotion thanks to the efforts of the Robins, face Leeds United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The League Two final, which follows just a day later, pits Rochdale and Stockport County together.
The Dale, of course, were Cheltenham's first ever opponents in the Football League, back in August 1999 and are now managed by ex-Robin Keith Hill.
It's been a long old slog for Rochdale in their attempts to get out of the bottom level of the Football League. They last won promotion from Division 4 back in 1969, only to be relegated five seasons later.
Having entered the Football League in 1921 Rochdale have only ever spent 6 seasons out of the bottom league. When the divisions were re-organised in 1958 (from Division 3 North & South) they were placed in the new 3rd Division. However, after just one season at that exalted level they were again relegated to Divison 4.
John Ward's Carlisle United may be licking their wounds after losing out to Leeds in the play-off semi final, but one man to have profited from an excellent game in the first leg for the Cumbrians, is keeper Keiren Westwood. That performance has seen him drafted into the Republic of Ireland's summer training camp in Portugal.
Huddersfield have appointed Mick Docherty as their new first-team coach at the Galpharm Stadium. The 57 year old is the oldest son of the former Chelsea, Villa and Manchester United boss, Tommy Docherty and he will be linking up again with Terrier's boss, Stan Ternant, whom he worked alongside at Burnley.
Colchester United have had a bid, believed to be in the region of £100,000, accepted by Nottingham Forest, for defender Matt Lockwood. The player signed for Forest in the summer of 2007, but only managed 12 first team appearances for the Championship bound club. He was previously at Orient for 10 years where the 31 year old made 375 apearances for the London side.
Peterborough United keeper Joe Lewis has won his first international U21 cap for England last week. The former Norwich City trainee joined The Posh during the January transfer window for a fee of £400,000. During the first half of last season the 20 year old was on loan at Morecambe.
Speculation is rife around Scunthorpe that striker Martin Paterson, last summer a John Ward target for Cheltenham Town, could well be on his way out of Glandford Park ahead of the new campaign.
The former Stoke City striker managed to grab a very worthy 14 goals for The Iron last season despite all their woes in the Championship. One of the favourites said to be after him are, Burnley.
One Scunthorpe player very likely to be returning to Whaddon Road next season is of course Grant McCann. After leaving us for Barnsley at the end of 2006, Grant then signed for United during January of this year.
