Yates: We made it far too easy for Wycombe

23 November 2014

Mark Yates after the 4-1 home defeat by Wycombe Wanderers:

We have not defended well from the second minute of the game, all the way through to the end and we've been punished for it. Lee Vaughan's sending off cost us the chance to have a right good go, but I expect better than that, even with 10 men.

I expect us to be more determined to shut goals out and have more energy to get something from the game. At 2-1 down at half-time we were still thinking we could get something, but whether we are not good enough, or we don’t have the right desire or know-how, it just didn’t happen for us and they ran out convincing winners.

I have just watched a team I care about and a team I put together perform not in a way I would have liked so of course I am down. We will have to be much better against Oxford next week and the hard work starts again on Monday.

I don’t think Lee went in two-footed, but it was reckless and it’s a red card for me. We made the perfect start, we told them what to expect, with a lot of balls up and they play off it, but it was disappointing to concede so quickly after taking the lead.

Things went against us and we reacted really poorly. We gifted them goals and it was just too easy. All we can do is get back on the training ground and ask them for honesty again, try to improve.

You are always under pressure, it’s what football is about. It’s about results and all I can do is keep working hard with my backroom staff to turn our poor run of form around.

We need Matt Taylor back in the team and hopefully he can be involved against Oxford, but it shouldn’t be because one player is out of the team. That’s not the case, but we have missed him, more than we thought. It’s not an excuse for anybody, me or my defenders.

John Marquis has gone back to Millwall now and I’ll be looking for a replacement. I’d like to thank John for his contribution, commitment and attitude, as well as his willingness to work for the team. We have to look at what we are trying to bring in now.

It’s all right going in for people, but we need the right ones. We have to decide is it the right time for young Bobbie Dale, or the right time for someone else. We’ll see where we are come Monday.
