Yates: York Are Improving

6 February 2014

Mark Yates is wary of a York side building for the future ahead of the game this weekend.

Robins manager Mark Yates speaking to the media this morning ahead of York away this weekend:

You can watch Mark's full press call on Robins Player right here.

"We are a little frustrated, as everyone is and the only way we can get ourselves out of it is to just work even harder than we already are. We need to try and get a bit more tempo to our game as well as energy and enthusiasm. If we can get that then hopefully that will take us beyond where we are at the moment. We need to play with a smile on our face. The basics are there but for some reason we are not winning games as many times as we would have liked this season but we are trying everything we can to get a positive reaction. I didn't have a problem with most of Saturday's play but I was just frustrated to have not got three points. We have been working on a few things this week to ensure our energy and performance levels are there so we can see games out.

"It's difficult at the moment but as long as the performances are there then we give ourselves a chance. For me, we have good players but we have not been seeing games out or winning enough full stop. If you are winning games then it becomes a habit and it looks after itself but the margins are really fine and we need to flip it so the winning margins come down on our side.

"We need togetherness, spirit and enjoyment. You have got to enjoy the good side of football as well as the bad and not let it faze you. You have to be even more enthusiastic and determined when things are going against you and that's what I'm after.

"David (Noble) trained on Tuesday but it's not right (hamstring). He's gone off with Weso to see a specialist today so hopefully we can figure out what it is. It's not like a hamstring where there's a certain spot, bleed or a bruise because we can't find anything on the scans or with Weso's hands but there is something there. It's a problem to him and unfortunately it is a problem for us.

"I thought Lee Lucas was excellent on Saturday. He showed what I wanted and if we can get him fitter in terms of senior football then I think we'll see what a good player he is.

"We have a couple of things (loans) that could happen tomorrow but probably not because we're travelling tomorrow as well. It'll probably be next week that I do something and I have a few targets. One isn't fit enough yet and the other one we are waiting on whether his club let him out next week. Kemar did more than alright for us and he's a good technical footballer but he expressed a desire to go back to West Brom which I fully understand. He wanted to be in the eye of his new manager and I understand that but, for me, if he doesn't want to be here then that is fine. I have got players here who are going to want to play for me and the club and wear the shirt with pride. I wish Kemar all the best for the future.

"Russ Penn and Keith Lowe are two ex-players who did really well for us, both good lads and players who I have worked with over the past 5-6 years. There's no problem there and sometimes it happens - sometimes it's time to move on. They have done alright for their new club but we have got to make sure we go up there and try to do better than we are and get three points. York are on a little run and they've just gone a place above us in the table so we know it'll be tough. They have got some good players and they look to be re-building for next season and beyond so maybe they think they can have a sneak at the play-offs like we all do. It'll be a tough place to go because you don't get anything cheaply in this league and certainly not at York."
