Yates: Disappointed Not To Win

18 March 2014

Mark Yates felt his side played well but was disappointed not to have held onto a 1-0 lead.

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates speaking to the press following this evening's 1-1 draw at home to Wycombe:

"Once we go 1-0 up then we should be winning the game but unfortunately we haven't. We were probably in our purple patch when they scored the penalty so it's disappointing but the lads worked really hard. It's bumpy and bobbly out there so it wasn't pretty but the effort was there. It was a great goal and we have talked about getting balls into the box and it was a great finish by Byron. We just have to look forward to Saturday now.

"My lads are adamant that Troy Brown was man handled before the penalty and that he was pushed. He is angry about that. It looked a foul from where I was but the referee didn't give us a lot so we certainly weren't going to get a freekick.

"Sido and the team got into a few areas where we should have delivered better balls and it gives strikers a chance. Sido delivered a great cross and it was nice to see Byron put it in the net. We should have won 1-0. Byron isn't 100% at the minute and he got 35 minutes. I was tempted to bring him on at half time but I wanted the impact and the crowd to respond because sometimes it goes unnoticed at half time. He can be pleased because he made a big impact on Saturday and again today but we knew he would coming off the bench. He is a big player for us and hopefully he has got chance for Saturday.

"We are far from perfect but we keep trying things to make them play. I thought Sammy was good tonight and I just wanted David (Noble) in there to change it slightly and give us that extra pass. It looked like it had worked with scoring. Jermaine looked livelier in that position behind the strikers too. Plenty of good things but disappointing not to have held onto the lead.

"All we can do is look forward to Saturday and the next nine games and keep aiming for 8th."
