Yates: Couldn't Find Momentum

4 October 2014

Mark Yates disappointed his side couldn't find momentum after scoring first this afternoon.

Cheltenham manager Mark Yates discusses this afternoon's 1-1 draw at home to AFC Wimbledon:

"It was a decent game. First half I thought we got into them, I thought we were the better team, we created the better chances. They always had the threat of Akinfenwa and Tubbs when they got the ball in and around our box but we could have had two or three of four goals in the first half. I was disappointed we conceded the goal and then we didn’t quite get to the same levels of quality in the second half.

"We have to deal in the reality, we’re finding it hard to get goals that we would really like. We’ll keep working at it and various different things, the reaction in training has been brilliant this week and I thought the movement in the first half was outstanding and we caused some real problems. At the start of the second half we just couldn’t get any real momentum and it became scrappy. Akinfenwa was always going to be a problem he was a real threat today and we dealt with him on the whole pretty well.

"Jack was outstanding he was one of our stand out players and he knocked some quality forward passes. It’s his league debut and he’s come up against those two, he can pleased with that. We need competition for places, I said after the game last week, I felt Troy’s booking was a silly booking and he got to five bookings in no time at all. I hoped whoever took his place plays brilliant then I can’t leave him out, so that was accomplished, I thought Jack was brilliant and there were lots of good performances and positives, we’ve just got to keep building. After a really good start, why can’t we get there? But that’s what happens sometimes, we’re not fretting about it, we’re still a work in progress and we’ll keep picking up points and keep giving ourselves a chance in games then we’ll be okay.

"What would worry me is if we weren’t playing well and getting battered, it’s by the odd goal. We’re disappointed today because we’ve scored the first one but we’ve not held on and not gone on to win the game. Credit to them they’ve caused us problems and they’ve got the equaliser. We couldn’t get that one to win us the game. We’ll move on to the next game on Wednesday night against Bristol City."
