Yates: Shocking Defending

25 February 2014

Mark Yates left bemused by first half defending as the Robins suffer heavy defeat.

Robins manager Mark Yates speaking to the press following tonight's 4-1 loss at home to Chesterfield:

"Believe it or not I probably think it was one of our better performances particularly at home. We've had 17 chances and efforts on goal but we've had a crazy seven minutes where defending was shocking at best and you cannot legislate for that that. They were always going to have a bit more possession than us and for 20 minutes I felt we dealt with it comfortably and we should have scored from a corner. We had a chance to get Ashley Vincent in at the far post a couple of minutes before that. Chesterfield will say they scored some good goals and they were good finishes but they should never have happened. They were all stoppable but all of a sudden you are out of the game.

"We wanted to win the second half obviously but we also wanted to win the game and defending like that won't do it. We have to pick ourselves up quickly because we have another tough game on Saturday.

"I'd say we were in the game at 0-0 and had created the better chances but we didn't make the correct final decisions and wasted a couple of good chances. You have to think on your feet obviously but you do think "Wow, where did that come from?". They have some good players and, yes, they were good finishes but we have got to be looking at ourselves and asking ourselves about the defending.

"We could have been 1-0 up before they scored but that probably sums up our season. We can't forget about it because we need to learn from it quickly and the boys will have to see the goals on the DVD but we've also got to make sure we are alright for Saturday now. We must dust ourselves down and go again. Tonight was never a 4-1 game but unfortunately it ended that way. Come Saturday we must make sure we are defending better than that."
