Yates: Cheap Goals Conceded

25 March 2014

Mark Yates rues soft goals and mistakes as the Robins lose to promotion hunters Scunthorpe.

Robins manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following tonight's 2-0 loss to Scunthorpe:

"I thought for 44 minutes we were right in the game and I thought we were getting on top but the manner in which conceded two freekicks was cheap. We had a little bit of a spell at the start of the second half and then Winnall scores again. It is disappointing but we shouldn't be conceding goals like that. We get a penalty to get us back in the game, we miss it and that just sums us up because we pretty much go out tamely.

"Steve Elliott picked up an ankle knock and we could have taken him off but we decided to just stick him up top to keep him on the pitch. It was a sorry tale for the last 15 minutes because we didn't get ahead of steam and have a go.

"They scored in our best spell and that has been a problem for us this year because we have conceded when on top in games. We weren't dominant but we were giving them as much as we were getting and we created a few good opportunities and a few saves from their keeper. There were a couple of things we could have done better with but we then give them a goal in the 45th minutes. I'm not sure when the second was but it was another gift and we have got to mark better than that. The marking is not good enough.

"They are cheap goals but we have to go again. There are seven games left and we just need to keep trying to get better and to try and improve. We've got to look at who is available for the weekend now and people have got to step up to the plate again.

"Two defeats in seven games but we need to get some points quick and we are more than capable of doing that. We have got to tighten up on anything because we can't just keep talking about playing well. They are a decent side and we know that but for 44 minutes we were as good as them but we are mid-table because we have moments where we lose our concentration be it for set pieces or for a mad spell like Saturday. We need to get as many points as we can quickly and make sure we are better than that."
