Yates: A Decent Point

7 September 2013

Mark Yates says his players have still got loads to work on despite clinching a draw against Pompey.

Mark Yates speaking to the press following this afternoon's score draw against Portsmouth:

"We can't keep conceding goals like we do at the moment, but we've showed spirit to dig ourselves out of it and we're very disappointed not to have won the game in the end.

"We didn't really do enough to win the game, but goals are massive. They change games, they change peoples mindsets.

"I thought we started alright, but the collision between our two centre halves and they score the first goal.

"We fought back into it, it's not free flowing football at the minute and we know that but there was a bit of magic for the goal. It was a great ball from Terry (Gornell) and a great finish from Jermaine (McGlashan). From 25-minutes we were dominant.

"But we don't deal with a throw in, we don't keep the ball and they go up to our end and the balls in the back of the net.

"We've got to cut out our individual and defensive mistakes. We're making bad decisions that are costing us goals and that's down to everybody.

"We were the better team for the last 20 minutes of the first half. But then we're 2-1 down again and heads drop.

"We're trying to play football in the second half but we're not in the mindset where it is free flowing, people are not quite right. We're trying to play but sometimes you've got to do what's on. Sometimes you've got to use your two strikers and I wanted us to do that more.

"We've scored right at the end and it looked liked we had won it, unfortunately we haven't."

A goal from Jermaine in each half helped Cheltenham towards today's point, his second goal coming in injury time.

"Jermaine did some really good things today, but like all my players he's not on top of his game. He's scored two goals and he's still got to do things more. That goes for everybody.

"We're still not their but it's a start.

"We stuck at it today, we've got loads to work on. We'll sort things out on Monday.

"I've told them well done for showing their spirit. We've just got to think of the performance on an individual basis and as a team. We know we have to be better than that, that said it's a decent point in the end."
