Yates: A Pleasing Result

2 September 2014

Mark Yates on this evening's 2-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Oxford.

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following tonight's 2-0 JPT win over Oxford United:

"I am delighted. We have made a few changes but I thought there was no difference to the team. The effort that the players have put in has been carried through today and the pleasing thing was that the work rate was there but there was still plenty to come. There were some really good fitness levels and performances.

"Goals change games and the first settled us down. We were great in the second half. Oxford try to play and they were decent in the first half but we handled most of it quite well. We grew into the game as it progressed and we thoroughly deserved to win. It's another clean sheet and I can't remember Trevor having too many shots to save. Lots of shots, two goals and a clean sheet - it's a pleasing result.

"Terrific goal the first one from a well worked set piece and then Craig and Terry have done well for Koby's backpost header. I had a look at Andy Haworth at ring wing back and I thought he got better and better as the game went on. It's new to him and he has played there once in a reserve game last week. Paul Black came on and showed that he is a really good player and Jack Deaman was excellent all night. We've managed to get a few boys rested up and game time for a few.

"It was a naughty tackle (red card incident) but I don't want Jason reacting like that because I don't want him to give the opposition bench something to get him with, not that they did that, but they were asking why he was sent off and it was because it was a poor tackle. I thought Jason was brilliant. There were some telling through balls and he has been fantastic since the start of the season. Long may that continue.

"More than anything it keeps the good habits going and it builds up momentum. We need to keep doing what we're doing but also strive to improve. There was some stuff that wasn't particularly brilliant but the endeavour, work rate and effort was there in abundance. I think the supporters and staff will take that."
