Yates: I Am Delighted

9 August 2014

Mark Yates delighted with performance and result despite his team being 'written off'.

Cheltenham manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following this afternoon's season opener at Bury:

"I'm delighted. It's a tough place to come and we have had a tough pre-season but we didn't do ourselves justice last week. Everyone wrote us off and I think for a team that apparently doesn't have a style or too many good players we showed people that we have. We are probably light in quality but results like that give us something to build on. All the supporters want to see is hard work and effort and they did that marshalled by my captain (Matt Taylor), Stevey and Troy.

"I'll be honest with you because how we weren't two goals up baffles me because I've seen it. The referee gave it and changed his mind. It was a great finish from Joe and yes we hung on but we knew how they were going to play and we didn't get sucked into it.

"In pre-season we were always going to try a different formation if you look at what we've got. Matty Taylor was probably playing at 75% today and he hasn't had enough pre-season if we're totally honest but we have the ability to play 3-5-2 with the players that we have got. They have done a really discipline job today and I played an experienced team but I asked for a men's performance and they gave me that. They limited a decent side to few chances and Bury were just pumping balls into the box for the last ten minutes and we coped pretty well.

"It didn't sound too good when Asa came off and he felt it straight away. That's life, that's football and it gives Joe or somebody else a chance.

"Joe Hanks has been good in pre-season and he deserves his chance but I just said to him there that he should have scored the first one! What a finish and Matty Taylor just summed it up for me. I had finished what I had to say and so had Shaun so Matty just said that it's a squad game, be ready and it is. We have some young kids on the bench and backing it up but we're going to need them at times. When they're good enough they will get their chance and Joe was absolutely outstanding today for his goal and his contribution to winning the game.

"I am happy with the group I have got for two weeks but we'll have to have a slight re-think on that one (Asa Hall injury) because we are light in that area. I'm close to a couple but reliant on their clubs."

Video reaction to come later this evening.
