Yates: Positives To Take

29 July 2014

Mark Yates happy with positives despite defeat.

Mark Yates discussing tonight's friendly at home to Bristol City with the local media:

"Brilliant, it was superb for us. I thought for an hour we were really good but in the second half they (Bristol City) really showed their quality. I thought our shape was really good and if you look at the goals then they are just mistakes from us. They have not carved us open and that is the really pleasing thing but the goals could have been defended better and we'll hold our hands up for that. We played some good football particulary in the first half and we came back at the end when we decided to keep the ball. They had two or three really good chances we should have done better with but I'm really pleased with what I saw particulary in the first half with a different system.

"Bury might play a similar system and a few others teams too so we thought we'd take a look at it. I didn't think it was a 4-1 game but I was delighted with the attitude of the players and we can take positives from the shape we kept and then learn from the mistakes that cost us goals.

"I thought they (Sterling-James, Gornell & Harrison) were outstanding in the first half and were a real thorn in their side. Both full-backs gave us something going forward and I think it went well. You're always going to try and step it up in the second half which Bristol City did but the goals were tired mistakes more than anything else.

"I can't offer Rakish (Bingham) anything at the moment in time and he has gone to train with another club which is fine. I will speak to Joe Curtis later and we will go from there.

"Asa (Hall) had a little injection (achilles) last week and he could have played 20 minutes tonight but we thought he was better off having a tough session earlier today and he worked his socks off. As a result of that he should come into the reckoning on Saturday (at Kidderminster)."

Video reaction will be live on YouTube and Robins Player shortly.
