Yates: Good Work-Out

26 July 2014

Mark Yates happy with good work-out in scorching temperatures at Bath

Cheltenham manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following this afternoon's friendly at Bath City:

"You can see how much I'm sweating being on that touchline so I felt for the players but, that said, we weren't at it in the first half. We threw Matty (Taylor) in and we were perhaps a little disorganised as a team and we didn't keep the ball well enough. Bath had the energy to do it in the first half and I said at half-time that we needed to improve because we want to win every game we play and I needed to see an improvement.

"They have worked really hard this week down at Woodbury Park - we have worked their socks off them. They were probably always going to be a little fatigued but we need to see them like that. It's not about beating Bath because it's about game time. We improved in the second half after Stevey (Elliott) came on and won some headers. I played almost a 4-4-2 in the first half and I don't know what it is but we need that extra pass in the middle and once we had that I felt we were a lot better.

"There's loads to do still. I didn't think Byron (Harrison) was going to get anything out of the game, Andy (Haworth) wasn't producing enough and his toes were sore too. I wanted to give Troy (Brown) and Stevey 45 too and we'll see where we go Tuesday. Everyone has got some time on the pitch, we've created a few things but they have too. Plenty to work but a really good work-out in unbelievable conditions.

"The positives was game time and Matt Taylor moved on from 45 to 60 and he'll only improve for that. I though Omari (Sterling-James) was outstanding when he came on and has shown glimpses of what he can do. At the moment he has got to be right in my thinking and that's what we need him to do. Just because we brough Koby in it didn't mean he wasn't going to feature.

"We'll get Rakish (Bingham) and Joe (Curtis) in on Monday and talk to them properly. I'm still after another couple of players so whether they are the two remains to be seen but I'll have a good chat with them and go from there.

"I'm looking for a central midfielder and a striker (as well as a goalkeeper). We need to see what is out there but we have two decent ones here and it's just whether they fit into the grand scheme of things."
