Yates: Win Was Deserved

16 August 2014

Mark Yates' thoughts on this afternoon's 2-1 victory against Accrington Stanley.

Mark Yates speaking to the local media following the first home game of the season versus Accrington Stanley:

"I thought it was a decent game. I thought we were the better team and we deserved our win but we were a little bit fortunate that they missed a penalty in the 93rd minute.

"At the moment it's about points and trying to find a way of playing that suits everybody. I thought for 75% of the game we were on top and we played some really decent football and created decent chances.

"We were frustrated not to double the lead. Matty (Taylor) hit the bar and Koby (Arthur) had a worldy saved and whilst I trust my back four, you're always on the edge.

"I can't see what happened for their goal, all of a sudden he's just come and walked in free, got the ball in the box and got in and scored against us.

"At the end I think we're a little bit unlucky but it was a penalty and we had fortune on our side for a change. I'll take that and move on to Tuesday.

"I would have been massively disappointed to have not taken all three points, but when they get a penalty in the 93rd minute there's not a lot you can do. You get a little bit of luck sometimes and we've deserved it. I thought we deserved everything we got last week at Bury. We put in a disciplined, hard working display against Brighton and then today I thought we took it to the next stage, we were better with the ball and created lots and lots of chances.

"I thought Terry Gornell was outstanding and then Byron (Harrison), he got a smash on his thigh and it was nice that he scored as I was going to take him off. He wanted to stay on for the corner so it was great to see him score. Then Koby came on and showed what a pocket dynamo he can be. He's something different to what we've got and can play in a couple of positions. I felt we deserved a bit of luck today.

"It was brilliant from Trevor Carson for the goal. I was thinking "what's he doing" but then I saw Koby sprinting on to it. It just shows that players are thinking about things and doing stuff by themselves and that is good for the team.

"We needed a good start this year, pre season was really tough and we didn't want to be winning 6 or 7 nil at places. We wanted different opposition and different quality. Every game we went to was competitive because I know this league and it was probably the jolt we needed to step up and be better. I think the players attitudes have been absolutely fantastic."
