Cheltenham Town Ladies end season with away victory

20 April 2015

St Nicholas 1 Cheltenham Town Ladies 2

Cheltenham Town Ladies entered their final game of the 2014/2015 season keen to end on a high against a team who they had already beaten at home this season.

The Robins started brightly on the 3G surface at Keynsham Town and dominated early on. After several chances to take the lead they finally made it pay as Emily Skipp was played in down the right hand channel and her powerful cross took a slight deflection on the way past goalkeeper for a well-deserved lead.

Ten minutes later following another great passing move this time down the left hand side, Adele Brown played in Rhona Donaldson and she calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Unfortunately Cheltenham let St Nicks get back into the game a few minutes later. After another long ball over the top their centre forward got past the Cheltenham defence and slotted the ball home.

Cheltenham came out in the second half keen to solidify their grip on the game and the St Nicks defence were keeping a high line which provided several opportunities to get in behind but Cheltenham failed to make it count.

As the game grew on strong pressure on the St Nicks defence caused a mistake from the goalkeeper but Cheltenham couldn’t make the most from two consecutive corners.

A late Donaldson free-kick went just wide and Anna Dennis made some crucial saves in the Cheltenham goal as St Nicks chased an equaliser.

The final five minutes brought more pressure from St Nicks who were desperate to get something from the game, but strong defending from the Cheltenham back four ensured that the season ended on a high with a 2-1 win following a difficult first season in the South West Premier League.

After consolidating their position in the South West Premier League all attention now moves to next season, with preparations already under way for the start of pre-season training in June.
