Marquis so happy with first League goal for Robins

19 October 2014

John Marquis was thrilled to open his League Two scoring account for Cheltenham Town in Saturday’s 3-2 home win over his old club Northampton Town.

The on-loan Millwall striker went on from the bench and scored the Robins’ third in the 84th minute.

After a September starved of goals, Marquis and fellow strikers Byron Harrison and Terry Gornell have all made welcome returns to the scoresheet in the past two games.

“We definitely needed the win because it’s been a long time coming,” Marquis said.

“It was also nice to score and hopefully it can set us up for Tuesday and we can get back to back wins at Cambridge.

“Northampton are a good team, who always have a goal threat but the defending from boys all over the pitch meant we stayed solid and we didn’t give them a chance to get an equaliser.”

Marquis’ only previous goal for Cheltenham came in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round win over Oxford United.

“It’s definitely nice to get a League goal and I think I have been a bit unlucky, hitting the bar and post and forcing some good saves, but it is goals that you are judged on,” he said.

“Hopefully this can give me a bit of confidence going into the remained of my spell here.

“Goals have been hard to come by for us, but now the strikers are starting to score again and we have really good competition up front now.”
