Howarth: Boys Working Hard

8 July 2013

Assistant manager delighted with progress made in pre-season ahead of Evesham friendly.

Neil Howarth speaking to the media ahead the Evesham friendly:

"Pre-season is a little different these days and we do tend to get the footballs out on the first day and I would say the majority of clubs do that now. It's not like the old days where it was just silly running for the sake of it. We are a football club so we like to keep them working with the ball.

"The boys are in at 3pm on Tuesday for a session. It'll just be for an hour and it won't be anything hard. Tuesday is just another day of fitness where the boys will end the day with an hour of football, some a little less. The weather can be draining but as long as they take their fluids on board then that's important.

"We have enough bodies with the trialists and dipping into the youth team. We could have perhaps had a game on Saturday where players got 45 minutes but they've done an extra three days training now so we have no problems with some players playing an hour to 70 minutes.

"Josh Rees (trialist) has done everything right whilst being here and he has good pedigree coming from Arsenal. It'll be nice to see him against a very competent Evesham side. The friendly matches enable you to learn different things from the trialists and they have trained with us here today too. They have been working hard and it would be interesting to see how they do competitively rather than just in a training session. There are a lot of players still available and good ones too but they are doing okay.

"You know how it works. We're looking to sign players and we're always speaking to people but no news will be released until they're done or nearly done. We'd definitely like to sign at least one more striker, perhaps a wide-man and perhaps another defender. We certainly like to think there will be three or four more bodies to come in definitely. The areas I've mentioned I think are the priority. It's an ongoing thing with us talking to people but things will probably start to happen mid-July because that's when players want to be back training and not sat at home missing pre-season. That was the great thing with Matt Richards because he wanted to get things done and dusted so he could be ready for August 3rd and that is what good pros do."
