Gornell: Fresh Start

12 July 2013

New signing Terry Gornell admits he is looking forward to starting a fresh with his new club.

Mark Yates made his fourth signing of the summer earlier today with striker Terry Gornell signing a two year deal.

The 23 year-old Liverpudlian was released by Rochdale back in May but he joins former Shrewsbury team-mate Matt Richards in making the move to Cheltenham Town.

The young frontman has previously played for Tranmere and Accrington as well as the Shrews and Dale but he

"I'm over the moon to be fair," said Terry.

"It's my first day and I'm just pleased to get involved and started. The surroundings are great and will give me a good workbase to work from and that's massive for me. We're going to be working from this training ground every day and this club certainly has a good working environment. It's the first thing that hits you and it's impressed me."

Terry can score goals at this level and there is no question about that. He's known for his work rate and his 100% effort when out on the pitch but it's his ability in front of goal that will be important come August.

He's scored goals in League Two for Accrington, Shrewsbury and Rochdale but Terry is confident he can do just the same for the Robins.

"I've scored goals at this level and that's why the manager has brought me in," explained Terry.

"I'm just looking forward to knuckling down, getting into the side and scoring goals. It's going to be a big year, not only for myself, but the club too because we've been in the play-offs over the last two years so hopefully we can all get us over the final hurdle and go up."

His move to Cheltenham is slightly cushioned with his old team-mate and friend Matt Richards having already made the move.

Both players were part of the promotion winning side in League Two a couple of years ago and Terry believes their experience could help Cheltenham take a step in the right direction.

"I think my experience at Shrewsbury can help.

"Matt and I have been there and done it so we know what it takes to get out of this league. The time I'm coming to Cheltenham is fairly similar to what time I went to Shrewsbury because they had been unlucky not to get promotion over the past few years.

"Hopefully we can all have a good season and get promotion."

Terry is the fourth signing of the summer with Mark Yates still aiming to bring in a winger in order to provide the service the strikers need to grab goals.

The striker has played Cheltenham Town a number of times and even scored against the Robins for Accrington in 2010 and for Shrewsbury in 2011.

He admitted he was excited about the prospect of playing for Cheltenham Town and believes it is a fresh start for him following a tough time at Rochdale.

"I know a lot about Cheltenham from the playing side of things," he said.

"I've played against the club a few times and it's always been tough. Every time I've come down here there always seems to be something riding on the game and Cheltenham have always been a strong outfit when I've played them.

"It's a fresh start for me. There was a change in manager at Rochdale and it didn't work out so I'm pleased with this move and with a two year contract I can try to get my head down and hopefully be successful by scoring a lot of goals."
