New Deal For Stevey

8 May 2013

Steve Elliott has signed a new on year deal with Cheltenham Town FC this afternoon.

Club captain Steve Elliott has this afternoon signed a new one year deal with the club which will see him through 2013-14.

Steve, 34, made 52 appearances for the club this season and that has brought his total appearance tally to 143 in which just three of those were as a substitute. He has scored seven goals during that time.

The former Derby and Bristol Rovers defender met with Mark Yates this morning and made his intentions very clear.

"It was a no brainer for me as soon as the gaffer told me he wanted me to stay," said Steve.

"It was just a case of signing the contract and it has been done nice and quickly which I'm happy with. I'm near enough my 150th appearance and that is over a three year period so I am really happy with that return. As a player you want to play as many games as you can and I am sure that the manager will always look to get the most out of you during that time too.

"Leaving Rovers and joining Cheltenham Town has been everything I hoped for. I'm really pleased that I'll be here for another year."

Elliott has been a major reason why Cheltenham kept 20 clean sheets this season but the disappointment of missing out on promotion again is something that plays on Steve's mind.

Cheltenham's leader admitted that missing out for a second consecutive season was a bitter blow but he also believes the progress is being made to ensure a bright future at the Abbey Business Stadium.

"Everyone is bitterly disappointed because we came close again but the club is progressing in the right way," he explained.

"There isn't a quick route to success especially when you don't have millions of pounds to throw at it. It takes time and that is what's happening here so we'll be aiming for promotion again next season."

That's all for next season but, for now, Steve Elliott is going to try and enjoy a well earned rest during the summer months but he admitted he will most likely be bored after the first few days.

"I didn't want this season to stop to be honest," said Stevey.

"It was one of the seasons where everything was going great for me and they don't always come along very often. The plan is to get rid of a few knocks, bruises and get my feet up but I'm one of those lads that get bored pretty easy and I'm sure I'll want to get back to it after a few days or a week's time!

"I'm glad I signed another year and I can't wait to get back on June 27th ready to go again."
