Sam Deering tells ctfc.com that he is aiming to become an integral part of Cheltenham Town this season.
Pre-Season has begun and the players are hard at work with fitness drills dominating the early stages of training.
No-one would envy the players as they embark on weeks worth of fitness and training drills designed to make them sharper and ready for another season of League Two football. 14 professionals and trialist Josh Rees enjoyed their first day back but more than anything, enjoyed being back amongst eachother's company.
One of the biggest characters in the whole group was also back and Sammy Deering admitted it was god to be back although he admitted he was never a massive fan of pre-season training.
"I'd say I was buzzing to be back but I don't like pre-season!" he laughed.
"Nobody likes pre-season training apart from Russ Penn but it is good to be back, good to see the lads and it's great knowing the season is only just around the corner. It's always nice to have some time off and get on your holidays with your family but it is nice to be back.
"I know you have to put the work in to get you through the season and pre-season is good for you because once you're up and running you feel better within yourself and you are much sharper on the ball."
Amongst the returning recruits are two new faces in the form of Jamie Cureton and Troy Brown who joined the club this summer from Exeter and Aldershot respectively.
Mark Yates' two summer signings are just the first of a number of new players heading to the Abbey Business Stadium but Deering believes the club can be proud of it's acquisitions in the transfer window so far.
"They are two very good players," he said.
"Jamie has scored goals wherever he has been and he showed it last year too. He's still scoring and hopefully he can do that for us this season. Troy has come in and he's in great shape. I think he's my age and he is a big lad! Playing against him he looks solid and hopefully he'll have a big impact for us.
"Players come in and out of football clubs like no tomorrow so you do get used to it and you just get your head down and work hard. You get to know eachother and make friends so you always stay in contact with players that come and go."
Sammy made 39 appearances for Cheltenham Town last season although 18 of those were as a substitute and that is something the 22 year-old wants to address this season.
It is clear that Sam has the ability to really become a key player for the Robins and that is exactly what he is aiming for this season but he understands he will have to give it his all especially throughout pre-season.
"My goal is to start nearly every week," said Sam.
"I hope to do that this season but I'll need to push myself a lot more in pre-season and come back stronger and keep that up throughout the entire season.
"The target is to get a lot fitness work into me during this pre-season and try to prove to the manager in the friendly games that I should be starting every week. I just like to go out every week and enjoy my football. I like to show people what I can do on the ball as well as off it. I'll be putting it all in again this season and I hope the fans enjoy it.Â
"To be honest, I go out there to win every week and while we are winning it is a lot more enjoyable but if we go one goal behind then it's a task to get back into the game and I enjoy tasks.Â
"What is better in the world than going out to play football in front of the fans and media? I love it."
Perhaps it's a little too soon to make predictions and cast opinion on how League Two will play out in 2013-14 but Cheltenham's motives are clear.
Two seasons of heartache perhaps overshadow what is actually a stunning achievement by Mark Yates and his backroom staff at turning a club around completely over a very short period of time. There's much work ahead and predictions are futile without dedication but Sam believes the division will be difficult once again although he believes Cheltenham Town can be one of the front runners once again.
"Last season we came close and the season beforehand the club went even closer so and those are good achievements.Â
"The amount of good teams in this league that haven't succeeded in recent years, big teams like Oxford, are finding it hard to get back in there. Cheltenham may not be a bigger name but over the last few years they have done better than some of those bigger teams in this league. It's crazy how football works sometimes.Â
"You have teams like Portsmouth and Hartlepool that have come down now and I think the division will be another tough one once again."
