REPORT: Evesham 1-5 Cheltenham Town

12 July 2016

Tuesday 12th July

Cheltenham ran out comfortable 5-1 winners at Evesham United in their second pre-season fixture of the new season.

First half goals from Danny Wright, James Dayton and Billy Waters gave The Robins a commanding lead at the break.

A goal from Dan Holman early into the second half and a late Amari Morgan-Smith penalty, as well as a consolation goal for Evesham from Carl Brown, meant Gary Johnson’s men recorded their second win in as many games.

It was another strong showing from the whole squad, including new signing Daniel O’Shaughnessy on his first game since signing.

After a strong start by Evesham, it took 10 minutes for Cheltenham to have their first shot on goal as Wright hit his half volley over the crossbar.

Less than a minute later, though, Wright opened the scoring after fantastic work from Waters on the right hand side.

The Robins were starting to control the game after the opening goal, and just a few minutes later new signing Daniel O’Shaughnessy had his thunderous shot saved by Kevin Sawyer.

With just under 20 minutes gone, Dayton doubled the lead after he picked the ball up and found space on the edge of the box before drilling a low shot into the near corner.

Cheltenham then extended their lead even further just before half time after Waters latched onto a missed header from Sysum, and his finish was a cool one into the bottom left corner.

After the break Gary Johnson’s side were immediately on the front foot again, as Amari Morgan-Smith ran through on goal but his powerful shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

It didn’t take long for the fourth goal to come though, as Holman smashed the ball into the top corner from inside the box.

Evesham pulled one back through Brown after he was given space thanks to a clever ball from Adam Mann.

With just a few minutes remaining Morgan-Smith was brought down inside the box, and the striker dusted himself  down to convert the penalty low into the bottom left corner.

First half team: Kitscha, Paslow, O’Shaughnessy, Nutting, Lymn, Cranston, Hall, Dayton, Munns, Wright, Waters.

Second half team: Kitscha, Barthram, Storer, Bower, Jennings, Thomas, Pell, Rowe, Trialist, Morgan-Smith, Holman.
