Plymouth Argyle vs Cheltenham Town

3 September 2016

REPORT: Plymouth 1-0 Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham Town lost 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle on a wet and windy afternoon in South Devon.

The Robins had the better of the first half and should have been ahead at the break with Daniel O'Shaughnessy and Danny Wright having the best chances for the away side.

The second half was a different story, however, as Plymouth dominated most of it and would have been in front earlier had it not been for David Goodwillie and Arnold Garita wasting good opportunities.

Sonny Bradley headed the only goal of the game in stoppage time to cruelly take a draw from Cheltenham's grasp right at the death.

From the first corner of the game, James Rowe’s ball in found the head of O’Shaughnessy in plenty of space, but his effort went high and wide.

With eight minutes gone Cheltenham then seemed to be gifted another opportunity as Billy Waters took advantage of a defensive error to take the ball on and shoot over the bar, but his blushes were spared as the referee, rather lately, pulled it back for a throw in.

It was a bright start for the Robins who were creating more chances in the opening 20 minutes, with Plymouth’s only shot at goal coming from substitute Goodwille.

On the 30 minute mark Wright brought the ball down well on the edge of the box and went past two defenders, but his shot from close range was well saved by Luke McCormick.

In first half added time Yann Songo’o’s header found Jake Jervis at the back post, but his volley went well wide of Russell Griffiths’ goal.

After the break it took almost 20 minutes for the first real chance to come as Goodwille was given the ball inside the area in plenty of space, but his low shot was brilliantly saved by the legs of Griffiths.

Minutes later Goodwille had another chance as he dribbled into the box and had a go at goal, but O’Shaughnessy bravely threw himself in front of the powerful effort to keep the scores level.

The home side were in control of the game at this point midway through the second period as Griffiths again had to make a smart save to keep out Garita’s shot at point blank range.

In the 82nd minute Cheltenham carved out their first real chance of the second half as Amari Morgan-Smith’s cross found Asa Hall on the edge of the box, but his half-volley came agonisingly back off the post.

Late into added time, a cross into the crowded Cheltenham penalty area saw Bradley rise the highest to nod the ball into the far corner to give Argyle the win.
