REPORT: Cheltenham Town 0-1 Cambridge United

Cheltenham Town went down 1-0 to play off chasing Cambridge United in a hard-fought League Two game at the LCI Rail Stadium.

The U's took the lead early on through Medy Elito's diving header, and it stayed that way until half time.

The Robins had chances the get an equaliser in the second half but just couldn't find a way past Cambridge goalkeeper Luke Berry.

The result means that Cheltenham stay 22nd in the table, still seven points clear of the relegation zone.

It took just one minute for the home side to create the first chance as Carl Winchester sprayed a great ball to Jack Barthram and his knock down found Danny Wright, but the striker couldn’t guide his header in.

However, almost instantly Cambridge went straight down the other end and took the lead as Luke Berry’s cross was diverted in at the back post by Elito.

The Robins tried to get back into the game as Liam Davis volleyed over and Winchester’s curling effort narrowly missed the top corner, but the ball just wouldn’t seem to go in.

With five minutes to go until half time The U’s should have gone even further ahead when Piero Mingoia’s cross was headed towards goal by Paul Lewis, but Scott Brown stood firm to make a fantastic save and keep it at 0-1 as the sides went in for the break.

After the interval Cheltenham came out firing and had two good chances to equalise straight away, but Davis’ shot went tamely into the hands of Norris and Dan Holman’s effort from the edge of the box flew high and wide.

With 57 minutes on the clock Billy Waters then had a good opportunity as Barthram found him in space on the edge of the six yard box, but he could only direct his header wide.

With just over quarter of an hour to go Brown came to the rescue again to keep out Gerry McDonagh’s shot after Emmanuel Onariase’s mis-kick had played him through on goal.

Wright then had a header cleared off the line before substitute Kyle Wootton’s effort from close range in added time was directed straight at the goalkeeper.
